PAR 5:
TRADITIONAL CRAFTMANSHIP – HANDMADE AND SELFMADE
Be active! Get to know your creative side! Customize your personal souvenir!
3 Days/2 Nights
Day 1: Batik and leather workshop - beach
On this day you’ll go to the countryside and try your luck creating your own batik. The skilled women will be happy to help you. In the end you can take home a finished batik as a reminder.
After lunch in a Permaculture center, drive to a neighboring village. There, people have specialized in making leather stamping, e.g. for the shadow play, but also for bookmarks and other small items. Make your own little souvenir. And if you feel like it, paint it. To round off your creative day, drive to the beach for a colorful sunset, if the clouds cooperate. Return to Jogja.
Optional: See how the puppet master, or dalang, breaths soul into the leather puppets during a shadow play in the night, telling the Ramayana story.
Day 2: Batik on wood and ceramics workshop
Your day begins with making a batik on wood item. This is same technique as batik on fabric, only on wood, used for decorating trays and fruit and cake dishes. In the next village people still produce ceramics in a traditional way. Have a look at it. Do you want to let your own creativity run wild? Here’s your opportunity!
Day 3: Silver handicraft - Weaving
First, look around the traditional silver village and watch the silversmiths at work. Then choose a design and motif. Do you want a ring or an armlet as a lasting reminder? You’ll be guided to make your own. It’s fun. After lunch, go to a weaving factory and see all the processes. Return to your hotel. The rest of the day is available for your own activities.
