CULTURAL WALKING TOURS

4 Days/3 Nights

 

Day 1: Suroloyo - Borobodur (5 hours)
First, the journey takes you along the Menoreh Hills. Up to narrow serpentines to Suroloyo, where you have a wonderful view of the surrounding volcanic landscape of Central Java. Walk about 2 ½ hours down to Borobodur, the sublime Buddhist monument from the 8th century, passing rice fields in steep slopes. At the temple, your experienced tour guide will introduce you to the history and the importance of the reliefs.

After lunch in a nice restaurant, you can take a bicycle tour through the villages. On the way back to Jogja you have the opportunity to drive into a cultivation area for salak fruits. (Snake skin fruits) You can pick the salak yourself and take further walks in the surrounding area.
Optional: In the evening, you can attend a traditional shadow play.

Day 2: Kaliurang and surroundings (7 hours)
Kaliurang, 28 km north of Jogjakarta, is a popular excursion destination to escape the tropical heat. It is located on the slopes of Merapi, (2,968 m) one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Explore the depths of the tropical mountain forest, walk through valleys and ravines.
After breakfast, visit a very special museum of the Sultan’s court of Solo. Do you still have energy? Then get on a jeep and explore the area affected by the eruption of the Merapi. It is also possible to undertake easy hikes.

Day 3: Prehistoric volcano - Mask carver – cave tubing (10 hours)
Start your day at 8 driving to an ancient volcano, climb up to the top (easy climb for about 30 minutes.) Meditate at a holy place and enjoy the beautiful panorama of rice fields and villages below you. Continue to a village where people still create beautiful carved wooden masks.
Afterwards you drive to a 300 m long cave with a flowing river. Have you ever tried cave tubing? Here is the opportunity. You will be pulled on truck tires by your guide through the cave. On the way back to Jogja, you'll pass a few minor roads with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. In a pine forest you can enjoy the sunset from a hill.

Day 4: Hike in the Menoreh Hills - Javanese farmer’s family (7 hours)
On this day, you will explore the western part of Jogjakarta. You’ll undertake a simple, yet strenuous hike along a river to a farmer’s family home. On the way back, have a look at a Javanese cemetery. If you are still interested, you can walk up to a cave. Return to Yogya.
